Make Space For Bass: On-Demand Ableton Mix Class
Fix your low end mixdown problems.
After reviewing more than 2300 mixes in my Track Feedback group, I've noticed one thing.
People usually have a hard time getting the kick drum and sub-bass working right in their mixes.
So I built this course to teach you how to do it.
Make Space For Bass gives you a simple mixdown strategy for bass-dropping tracks you can export and play in your sets immediately.
But there's something different that makes this course stand out.
BUILT-IN TUTORIALS
You do the lessons inside Live.
That's what makes this course completely unique.
This is a fully interactive learning experience where you follow along inside guided Ableton Projects.
Take a look at this image to get the idea.
These guided Projects are called Session Lessons and they're special because you learn by actually DOING IT, not watching hours of boring videos.
It's the best way to learn how to mix, and there's nothing else like it.
Here's how it works.
COURSE OVERVIEW
You'll be mixing a 16-channel house track in the course, which has four Lessons.
In each Lesson you'll learn to identify problems in the mix and then solve them, by using Audio FX Racks and mix tools right there inside Live.
The activities are focused on strategic problem-solving for your low end mix.
You get real audio engineering techniques, specially applied to electronic music, with hands-on activities that make it fun.
By the end you'll be able to make tight, solid, low-end mixes that are ready for mastering.
Here's what you'll learn.
๐๏ธ LESSON ONE ๐๏ธ
We start with the individual Tracks. The strategy is to do get every sound coming through loud and clear.
In this lesson you learn to solve problems with the dynamics, tone and level.
You'll get essential mixdown techniques like Gain Staging, EQ'ing, Compression, and of course reading your Peak Level Meters.
๐๏ธ LESSON TWO ๐๏ธ
Next we balance the mix levels, starting with your kick and sub.
You learn to build a "bottom up" mix to hit that deep, heavy low end thump we need to feel.
You'll find out exactly where to set your kick drum levels, where a truly loud mix comes from, and what NOT to do in your mix (everyone gets this wrong at first).
๐๏ธ LESSON THREE ๐๏ธ
The next step is to expand the stereo width and add spatial FX like Reverb and Delay.
You'll learn about using submixes for your Instruments and Drums.
You'll learn which sounds to Pan to the sides, which ones stay in the Center, and the importance of checking your mix in Mono.
๐๏ธ LESSON FOUR ๐๏ธ
The final strategy is to export a crisp, clean stereo mix with plenty of headroom for mastering.
You'll learn to avoid the common mistakes like Distortion, Phase cancellation, Frequency Masking and Over-Compression.
And you'll come away with the confidence to manage the biggest Mix Projects, even with track count over 100 individual channels!
COURSE RUN TIME
Each lesson takes about 45 minutes.
The best plan is to do one Session Lesson per day, and spend time applying what you learn in your own mix projects right away.
You could complete the whole course in about six hours, but it's best to allow a week.
That's how you get the most out of it.
ABOUT SESSION LESSONS
They're called Session Lessons because you do the whole thing in Session View (aka the mix window).
Here's how they work.
- You start by downloading a regular .alp Live Pack from this site
- You expand the Ableton Project folder, open it up and press play
- First you hear audio instructions that tell you what to do
- Next you see automated examples that show you what to do
- Then you take the controls and fix the mix, solving problems step by step with the FX Racks and Mix tools
- Last step: you go back to your own originals and apply what you just learned, and hear your mixes get better and better
- Finally, you export a stereo mix and play it on a few sets of speakers to hear how good it sounds!
Session Lessons give you an engaging learning experience that takes place right there inside Live, without needing to pause a video or keep two windows open at the same time.
It's the best way to learn because you learn by DOING IT.
And you'll come away with solid practical skills you can use immediately, to make bass-dropping mixes that hit hard like pro tracks!

๐๏ธ MIX TEMPLATES ๐๏ธ
Take these production tools with you after the course.
When you're done with the Session Lessons, you get three mix templates to put in action with your mixes.
You can drop in audio files or use them as Templates to make new tracks.
They're setup exactly like the mix projects in the course, with all the Track Groups and FX Racks you just learned how to use.
So it will be super easy for you to make great mixes with your original music.
๐๏ธ AUDIO FX RACKS ๐๏ธ
In addition to the mix templates, you also get 24 Racks for individual sounds, Groups, Return FX and the Master Channel.
Drag them into your User Library so you can easily drop them on any channels, groups or Buses you're setting up in new mixes.
These are the same ones we use in all the Lessons, so they will be familiar and easy to use.
MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR
Hey, I'm Steve Knots. I started making electronic music in 1998 with the MPC2000, one turntable, a 400watt bass amp, and a cassette deck for recording.
Then I discovered Ableton Live and completely fell in love with it. I sold all my synths and samplers and went 100% into Ableton production.
From there I spent ten years doing hybrid Ableton DJ sets in NYC and Europe, playing original tracks with MC's, singers and soloists on trumpet, sax, flute, turntables, hand drums, etc.
Along with DJ gigs, I also worked as a live sound engineer with literally hundreds of bands, at venues from bars and clubs up to outdoor festivals.
And for my technical credentials, I studied audio engineering at the Sonic Arts Center in NYC (BFA 2003).
What I teach in this course is the real deal, and you can get it here.
In short, there's nothing else like this available anywhere else.
